What our team does
What our team does
Our team’s greatest aspiration is to inspire involvement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics throughout our local and the global community. We do this through many outreach efforts, but most notably through FIRST Lego League (FLL). This program helps us get young students involved with engineering and technology at an early age. FIRST Team 1710 hosts FLL Summer Camps, FLL Winter Workshops, and an FLL Regional Qualifying Tournament annually.
In additional to this, we mentor several local elementary and middle school FIRST Lego League teams to promote the message of FIRST. Each of the teams we work with additionally received support in the form of grants and FLL Kits to jump-start their team. The younger students really enjoy learning from the older, experience FIRST Team 1710 members. At the same time, the older students learn valuable leadership and mentoring skills, making the experience mutually beneficial. At our annual FLL Regional Qualifier, teams we mentor, as well as other schools close by, are able to participate in the competition.
FLL Team 8234 – Cyclone Robotics
Based out of nearby Sante Fe Trail Middle School, this team was founded in the fall of 2014 by one of our team’s mentors, Chuck Maples, and three of our team members. FIRST Team 1710 students continued to mentor the middle school team throughout the season, providing vital assistance while also letting the FLL students succeed and fail on their own. Persevering through the challenges of an FLL season, this team was highly successful. They received the Inspiration Award at our Regional Qualifier, advancing on to the Kansas City FLL Championship, where they also earned the Project-Presentation Award.
FLL Team 10293 – Lancer Robotics
Also in their inaugural season, Lancer Robotics is based out of local Scarborough Elementary School. Founded and coached by FIRST Team 1710 member Laurie Gilson, this team was also highly successful at the Regional Qualifier.
