Let us introduce ourselves
Our You Go Girl initiative personifies our team’s dedication to reversing society’s perception of women in engineering by inspiring girls to become involved in STEM fields. These efforts are focused at the younger generation, attempting to teach girls that science and engineering can be exciting, fun, and challenging.

“It has showed me what I can do because it gave me the confidence, support, and strength to do what I wanted.”
What we strive to do.
The team will have taken 100 Girl Scouts and 210 elementary school girls to the FRC Regional in KC in 2012, 2013, and 2014, to experience the life-changing event that rivets our girls’ attention, learn about opportunities for girls in STEM fields, and spread enthusiasm for FIRST. We design T-shirts, posters, trading cards, buttons, slogans and more to introduce girls to the FIRST program that spread enthusiasm for FIRST. These materials feature each of the 15 girls on the team, how FIRST has impacted them, and other facts about STEM fields. Our efforts have met with success: girls make up over a third of our team (including various leadership positions). You Go Girl Has also appeared in a prominent article on the USFIRST newsletter, and other teams have started emulating our program’s efforts.

The primary goal of STEM CONNECTION is to ignite a love for STEM in middle school girls from two Title 1 middle schools (Indian Trail and Oregon Trail) in Olathe, Kansas. To accomplish this, a multi-tiered system of resources and mentorship is utilized to offer highly interactive and engaging STEM Dayz for over 100 sixth grade girls each quarter of the school year, the goal being to continue this offering as the girls progress each year from middle to high school. High school girls from Olathe North High School and Olathe Northwest High School, who are passionate about STEM studies and interested in pursuing post-secondary college and technical programs in STEM fields, lead the STEM Dayz. Additionally, STEM CONNECTION establishes long-term, meaningful relationships between the middle school girls and older females at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels via social networking, STEM outings/field trips, relaxed Meet-and-Greet sessions, and panel discussions. Our vision is to create a self-sustaining mentoring program that will unfold over a period of several years, ultimately reaching hundreds of young girls in Olathe.

Our You Go Girl Posters are produced in order to showcase how each girl on our team has been affected by their FIRST experience. Each girls’ poster includes a word that describes what FIRST means to them, and a picture of them hard at work. Here are links to download these PDF posters:
Empowerment, Self-Expression, Originality, Leadership, Innovation, Ingenuity, Application, Future, Cooperation, Incentive, Motivation, Devotion, Commitment, Opportunity, Imagination, and Passion.
Along with our You Go Girl posters, we also produce YGG “baseball” cards. Now, everyone knows that baseball cards have the stats, team, and position of the player, so why not do the exact same thing for every girl on the team? Each card has the field of engineering that the girl is interested in, a description of the field, colleges that offer a degree in that field, real-life examples, and job opportunities.
